Sam Coe & The Long Shadows are a UK Country/Americana band from Norwich, Norfolk.
They have just released their highly anticipated debut album Full Moon, which sees them firmly position themselves at the forefront of the UK Country/Americana Music scene. Produced by Kevin Duncan at Gingerdog Studios in Suffolk, this vibrant collection of honest, gutsy and heart wrenching songs ride on a wave of seventies retro country-pop. A sound that will appeal to fans of artists from Margo Price, to Kacey Musgraves via the Dixie Chicks.
Full Moon is the first release since the debut EP “Santa Fe” (which achieved critical acclaim) in 2017. Songs such as “Whiskey Dreaming” and “End In Tears” dig deeper into Sam’s songwriting ability, drawing on a failed relationship and subsequent heartache, a perfect recipe to write a country music album around. “Motel Cherokee” leans towards traditional country music, a story of a road trip overnight stay that should’t have been so good, and the title track “Full Moon” is a 70’s dream, a chaotic 3 minutes of catchy hooks and hammond organ. “Tennessee Blue”, written alongside co-writer Amanda Moore is a stand out country love song, which the band decided just had to make the album.
“Taking it right back to what I know, simple and honest lyrics that I can truthfully pour my heart into. This album is a story of the before, during and after of a certain chapter in my life… it’s been therapeutic to finally bring it together” Sam says.
The band were formed in 2015, when Sam placed an ad for local musicians interested in joining an Americana/Country band. Coincidentally, the first response came from childhood friend and drummer Wayne Moore.. Sam reluctantly responded, expecting Wayne to bow out when he realised it was her. However, with the addition of Steve Clark (Dobro and Lap Steel) and later on Philip Pearson (Bass) it became apparent that The Long Shadows knew just how to handle Sam and her songs. The boys in the band helped to create a sound that blends modern Country with rootsy Americana, with a nod to the traditional sounds we all love.
Talking about the current UK Country Music scene, Sam says “It’s important to me that although the music is able to be played on the radio, it’s got to keep some substance. There are so many UK Country acts at the moment with fake accents and cliches, it’s a real shame people forget to include the truth in the music they’re making”
Sam’s previous career included a short stint in pop music, unashamedly part of a manufactured band that had the opportunity to tour with Take That - “Pop music doesn’t have to be bland, but unfortunately some of it is. We definitely cross over into the realms of pop music on this record.. but it’s far from bland“.
Sam Coe & The Long Shadows are bringing something special to the Country Music scene that’s already been recognised by 2 consecutive years securing spots at the renowned C2C: Country to Country festival at the O2. This year has also seen them supporting The Shires, Jess & The Bandits and playing shows around the country. The end of 2018 saw a Number 2 single in the iTunes Country Chart and 2 x BCMA nominations.
